Crown of Thorns

Botanical Name:

Euphorbia milii

Common Name:

Christ thorn, Christ plant

Genus:

Spurges (Euphorbia)

Will it survive Kuwait’s summer or is it just seasonal?

Will survive Kuwait’s summer

Description:

Euphorbia milii has a very thorny stem, so be careful during planting. This drought tolerant plant comes in multiple-colored flowers, while in Kuwait I have only witnessed the white, and red.

Toxicity:

This plant is highly poisonous, with ingestions of any part causing moderate toxicity. Its sap contains harmful chemicals that can result in both eye and skin irritation if not handled with caution. Contact with the eye may cause puffing and swelling and contact with the skin will likely lead to dermatitis. Poisoning through ingestion can cause irritation and blistering of the mouth and throat, vomiting, and abdominal pain. If the sap is ingested, it may cause temporary blindness.

Tips for Planting and Watering Needs:

Plant in full sun during the mid to late September when the highest temperature reaches 35 °C. Water once daily during early winter. During the colder days of winter, you could water once every two to three days. Make sure not to water when there is rain. During early summer water once a day, while during the hotter days of summer water twice daily in the early morning, preferably before sun rise, and after sun set. Allow soil to dry completely between watering.
